Mira Woodworth

"In our current culture of mass-produced imports, I believe the Arts and Crafts movement is as relevant today as it was a century ago." Glass artist Mira Woodworth is a lifelong student of the Arts and Crafts movement that was popular at the turn of the 20th century. A response to the Industrial Revolution's machine-made signature on daily life, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated artists for bringing excellent design to common household decorations and for making fine art accessible to everyone. Woodworth's "River" series is a body of work developed using recycled window glass. It is named for its heavy texture and unexpected depth, which give the appearance of precious metals beneath a clear flowing river. The warm, tactile nature of the work invites viewers to touch and explore each piece. Each of the artist's works is made from hundreds of hand-cut strips of glass that are cast into shape. Once fired, each piece is leafed and signed. Woodworth has developed special firing schedules and foiling techniques specific to the River series. Because each piece is handmade, no two are exactly alike.
