“Leviatano (Leviathan in Italian) is another one of my spiral series. Each one is a different attempt to build an abstract form roughly representing the spiral nature of life itself. This piece was purchased by the Anne Marie Sculpture Garden in Solomons, Maryland. They were asked to place the piece on loan to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey where it has been displayed the past several years.

If this piece is successful, it is because it implies muscle and tissue beneath the surface of the hard stainless steel skin. Our eyes are keenly attuned to spotting life in any being. We instantly pick up the cues that speak to any living thing (even when it is not living). The sculpture seems cocked and ready to release a tremendous whipping explosion of energy. Hopefully every viewer will relate to that feeling.” -Michael Shewmaker
